Best Leather Backpack Purses for Women

A category dominated by coated synthetics, filtered down to the bags that are actually hide — four picks from a soft everyday daypack to a structured upgrade.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we pick

The backpack purse is one of the most useful bag shapes there is: the capacity of a small tote, the hands-free comfort of two straps, and a silhouette that does not look like hiking gear. It is also one of the hardest categories to shop honestly, because it is overwhelmingly served by coated synthetics sold under the words “vegan leather,” “PU leather” or simply “leather backpack purse” with the material buried further down the page.

Every pick on this page is real hide except one, and that one is labeled plainly rather than described in a way that lets you assume otherwise. That is not a criticism of synthetics — a well-made coated bag is light, wipe-clean and cheap, and for some people that is exactly right. It is a criticism of listings that make you work to find out which you are buying.

We have not carried these bags for years, so there are no invented durability results below. What you get is the grade as each listing states it, an honest read on size and structure, real cons on every pick, and a live price rather than one typed in months ago.

How this is funded:we earn a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. It never changes which product we recommend, and we’ll tell you when we’d skip one. Full disclosure.

#1Best overall

Kattee Genuine Leather Backpack Purse (Medium Daypack)

The default answer to 'a leather backpack purse that isn't PU.' Kattee's soft daypack is real hide in the size most people actually want — bigger than a purse, smaller than a work backpack — without the coated-canvas trade-off most listings in this category make.

  • Genuine leather rather than the coated 'vegan leather' that dominates this category
  • Medium size hits the everyday sweet spot — wallet, water bottle, small tablet
  • Soft hide is comfortable against the back without padding

#2Best for security

Kattee Genuine Leather Anti-Theft Backpack Purse

The genuine-leather women's pick, and the one that solves the real problem: most 'leather backpack purses' are PU. This is actual leather, with an anti-theft back-zip layout that keeps it secure and still looks like a purse, not a daypack.

Strengths

  • Genuine leather, not the PU that dominates this category
  • Anti-theft back-panel zip for secure carry
  • Convertible — wears as a backpack or a shoulder bag

Trade-offs

  • Purse-sized, not a work-laptop backpack
  • Heavier than the synthetic alternatives

Laptop fitStated to hold an 11-inch tablet; no laptop sleeve

Construction note. The listing's bullets call the material top-grain pebbled cowhide while the title says only leather, so leatherType records the lower claim. The listing publishes no exterior dimensions and tells buyers to confirm the size before ordering — so we do not state one.

How to shop this category without being misled

Two checks do almost all the work. First, look for the word “genuine,” “top-grain” or “full-grain” in the title — a grade named in writing is a claim the seller can be held to, and the FTC’s leather guides require material that only looks like leather to be disclosed as imitation. Second, open the structured product details and read the material field. If the title says leather and the material field says polyurethane, believe the material field.

A third signal, useful when the first two are ambiguous: weight. A real-leather backpack purse of everyday size is noticeably heavier than a coated one, and sellers often publish the weight even when they are coy about the material. An unusually light “leather” backpack is usually not leather.

What we ranked on

Material first, stated as the listing states it. Then size, because this shape lives or dies on it: too small and it is a novelty, too big and it stops looking like a purse. The sweet spot is a bag that takes a wallet, a water bottle, sunglasses and a small tablet without bulging.

Then structure. A soft, unlined leather backpack collapses when it is not full, which some people love and others find sloppy. A structured one keeps its shape and looks more deliberate but weighs more and is less forgiving when overfilled. Both are on this list on purpose.

Finally, access. The one genuine drawback of this shape is that anything on your back is hard to reach. Bags that solve it — a side zip, a top flap that opens one-handed, a back-panel opening — are meaningfully more pleasant to live with, and we say which do.

The anti-theft question

Backpack purses get marketed heavily on security, and the claims deserve a plain answer. A back-panel zip is a real feature: it puts the opening against your body, where nobody can reach it while you are wearing the bag. An RFID-blocking pocket protects contactless cards, which is a small, genuine benefit. Lockable zip pulls deter a casual hand.

What none of them are is theft-proof. A determined thief with a blade gets into any leather bag. Treat these features as friction that removes the opportunistic risk, which is the risk most people actually face, and buy accordingly. Our travel crossbody roundup goes further into what is worth paying for.

Which one to buy

The Kattee soft daypack is the default: real leather, the right everyday size, and comfortable against the back without needing padding. If you commute through crowds or travel with it, the Kattee anti-theft version trades a little style for a back-panel opening that solves the reach problem and the security one at once.

The COOLCY is the upgrade — a thicker, more structured hide in a retro rucksack shape that holds its form empty. It costs meaningfully more and weighs more, and it looks like a considered choice rather than a practical one. And the Calvin Klein Reyna is here as the brand-name option, in a coated signature material rather than hide, which we say up front. If the label and the finish are what you want, that is a legitimate purchase; it is simply not a leather one.

Living with a leather backpack purse

Two straps mean the wear points are different from a tote’s. Look after the strap attachments, which take all the load, and the base, which gets set down on floors. Do not store the bag loaded — hanging a full backpack purse on a hook for months stretches the straps permanently.

Otherwise the care is simple: wipe off dust, keep it out of direct heat, and condition it once or twice a year. Genuine leather at this weight absorbs conditioner quickly, so use a light coat and let it soak in. Our conditioning guide covers the amounts, and the storage guide covers the off-season mistakes that quietly ruin bags.

Frequently asked questions

Are most leather backpack purses actually leather?

Many are not. This category is dominated by coated synthetics sold as 'vegan leather' or 'PU leather', and some listings use the word leather in the title while the structured material field says polyurethane. Reading the grade in the title and confirming it in the material field filters out almost all of the misleading ones.

What size backpack purse should I get?

For most people, a medium: big enough for a wallet, phone, water bottle, sunglasses and a small tablet, small enough that it still reads as a purse. Anything larger starts to look like a daypack, and anything smaller struggles once you add a bottle.

Are anti-theft backpack purses worth it?

If you travel or commute through crowds, yes — mainly for the back-panel opening, which puts the zip against your body where nobody can reach it. RFID pockets and lockable zips add smaller genuine benefits. None of these makes a bag theft-proof; they remove opportunistic risk, which is the risk most people face.

Can a backpack purse hold a laptop?

A small tablet, usually; a laptop, rarely, and almost never with proper padding. These are purses in a backpack shape rather than work bags. If you need to carry a laptop daily, a purpose-built leather work backpack with a padded sleeve is the right category.

Is a soft or a structured backpack purse better?

Neither, but they suit different people. Soft leather is lighter, more forgiving when overfilled and drapes against the back, but it slumps when it is half empty. Structured leather holds its shape and looks more deliberate, at the cost of weight and flexibility. Choose by how you feel about a bag that sags.

How do I keep the straps from stretching?

Do not store the bag loaded, and do not hang it by one strap for long periods. Empty it when you get home and store it upright, lightly stuffed if you want it to hold its shape. Strap attachment points are where a backpack purse fails first, and both those habits are what stress them.
